Position Summary: 

Under general direction of the Program Director, the Cost Estimator supports program engineering and construction controls by managing the capital improvement’s cost estimate program

 

Essential Functions:

  • Manage the estimating process
  • Assisting with pricing and negotiating changes to the scope of work with the client and contractors
  • Reviewing bid documents and assisting with bidder solicitation activities
  • Document and execute changes within the scope of the project
  • Anticipate problems and work with the client, architect, engineers, contractors, and project managers to identify and implement corrective action
  • Produce detailed final cost estimates
  • Identify constructability issues through the estimating process
  • Identify value engineering alternatives
  • Recognize and recommend alternative designs/scopes
  • Gather details and maintain current market data to accurately estimate construction and material
  • Coordinate design phase peer estimating by outside consulting cost estimating firm
  • Develop estimates and backup documentation to support planning, design, and construction level estimates
  • Provide check estimates of external estimates and quantities
  • Develop quantities using quantity surveying software
  • Interpret and apply construction knowledge and experience to developing all levels of estimates
  • Identify and define new process improvement opportunities
  • Apply program Quality Controls standards to the work

 

Knowledge and Critical Skills/Expertise

  • Four-year degree in a construction related field
  • Minimum of 5-8 years of experience
  • Fluency in typical project controls software
  • Proven ability to perform in a lead capacity
  • Knowledge of industry practices and regulations
  • Ability to take the initiative where necessary
  • Ability to work independently and see tasks through to completion with minimal input
  • Ability to function within a team environment
  • Excellent communication skills

 

Physical Demands and Requirements:

  • Ability to work 40 hours plus per week in an office setting.
  • A valid California Driver’s License is required
