Database Administrator (Oracle & SQL Server), San Diego, CA

 

Position Summary: 

Under general direction, the Database Administrator participates on the Rail Deliver Partners for High Speed Rail.  Under the general direction of the Enterprise Technologies Manager and the Infrastructure Operations Lead, the Database Administrator is responsible for configuring, enhancing, maintaining the California High-Speed Rail Authority Amazon Web Services database environments.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Modifies existing database and database management systems or directs programmers and analysts to make changes
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements security measures to safeguard information in computer files against accidental or unauthorized damage, modification, or disclosure
  • Develops standards and guidelines to guide the use and acquisitions of database administration software and to protect vulnerable information
  • Configures SQL Server and Oracle database alerts and monitoring utilities
  • Troubleshoots SQL Server and Oracle database service outages
  • Documents database environments
  • Installs and configures new SQL Servers and Oracle Databases
  • Sets up backups for all production database servers and verifies that backups are running
  • Regularly checks logs for unusual events
  • Schedules maintenance jobs and verifies they are running successfully
  • Monitors disk space to ensure database servers don’t run out of space
  • Periodically monitors server performance
  • Monitors and rebuilds indexes as necessary
  • Provides database support to end users on an as needed basis
  • Review procedures in database management system manuals prior to making changes to database.
  • Identify and evaluate industry trends in database systems to serve as a source of information and advice to Information Technology branch senior management.
  • Specify user and user access levels for each segment of database.

 

Knowledge and Critical Skills/Expertise

  • Knowledge of: Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle Database technologies
  • Minimum 7 years experience
  • Ability review procedures in database management system manuals prior to making changes to database; identify and evaluate industry trends in database systems
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server SSRS/SSAS, Oracle BI Publisher and Amazon Web Services database environments.
  • Certified in SQL, MCSA, or MCSE preferred.
  • Working knowledge of a cloud hosted environment.

 

Physical Demands and Requirements:

  • Knowledge of: Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle Database technologies
  • Minimum 7 years experience managing database systems including Oracle and SQL servers.
  • Ability review procedures in database management system manuals prior to making changes to database; identify and evaluate industry trends in database systems.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server SSRS/SSAS, Oracle BI Publisher and Amazon Web Services database environments.
  • Certified in SQL, MCSA, or MCSE preferred.
  • Working knowledge of a cloud hosted environment.
