Gas Distribution Pipe Planner (Engineer), Chatsworth or Santa Ana, CA

 

Position Summary: 

Under direct supervision, performs construction planning, and sketching for the replacement of medium pressure mains and services related to gas distribution pipe replacement.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Under guidance, locates existing pipe and mains related to the pipe replacement project.
  • Determines the feasibility of the proposed additions or replacements in order to estimate the probability of construction.
  • Prepares Base Sketches utilizing GIS/GWD to show property ownership, substructures and other preliminary information needed to plan the replacement, relocation or addition of main pipelines and services.
  • Develops construction sketches utilizing GIS/GWD per Utility Client’s sketching and mapping requirements. Sketches will identify required construction material; satisfy agency permitting requirements and ROW/easements; provide all necessary information for appropriate field construction; and meet Company reconciliation and mapping requirements.
  • Conducts job site visits and thorough field investigations in alliance with Company systems of record necessary to plan the replacement of medium pressure mains and services in accordance with Company and regulatory requirements. Company systems of record include, but are not limited to GIS, SAP, and SAP Service History.
  • Plans through the use of Company’s SAP Construction Planning & Design module including the creation of Notifications, Construction Measures, and Compatible Planning Units.
  • Preparation and routing of construction packages through each impacted department to satisfy all necessary system and Company prerequisites including, but not limited to Company’s System Protection, Leakage, Engineering, and Area Resource Scheduling departments to meet all requirements prior to dispatching job into construction.
  • Engagement, communication, and coordination with key Company Operations and Technical Services personnel to conduct necessary project reviews and approvals as well as address any questions that may arise from projects that may be in construction or reconciliation.
  • Preparation and routing of construction packages through each impacted department to satisfy all necessary system and Company prerequisites including, but not limited to Company’s System Protection, Leakage, Engineering, and Area Resource Scheduling departments to meet all requirements prior to dispatching job into construction.
  • Using engineering calculations, prepares designs for cost effective construction of service orders conforming to company safety and reliability standards, governmental regulations, state and federal guidelines.
  • Prepares documentation to support the engineering of new additions to the SDG&E; infrastructure.
  • Calculates all costs associated with assigned projects
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge and Critical Skills/Expertise

  • Must pass test after a 5-week training course, provided by the Company.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering or college level courses, or vocational certificate in related areas is desirable.
  • Requires a minimum of 3 years of experience in one or more of the following: AutoCAD drafting, utility pipelines or project management support or related areas.
  • Must have conceptual and analytical abilities to design, plan and perform Pipeline Planner activities.
  • Customer service experience, high standards, persuasiveness, negotiation skills and being proactive in solving problems is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication skills are necessary to successfully manage all aspects of project requirements.

 

Physical Demands and Requirements:

  • Requires the ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time
  • Ability to visit job sites within the Company’s service territory is required, including the traversing of uneven terrain.
  • A valid California Driver’s License is required.
