Long Beach Community College District Construction and Modernization Bond Program

Cordoba Corporation provides comprehensive program management serving as the prime consultant for the Bond Program Management Team. This $770 million-dollar new construction and renovation program of over 30 facilities includes site development and planning, area-wide planning, design management, project controls, financial analysis, project management and construction management. The projects have included a variety of facilities including a central plant and infrastructure improvements for the Liberal Arts Campus, a Science and Technology Center, a state-of-the-art child development center and an aviation building, classrooms, library and learning resources center, administrative buildings, gymnasium and stadium facilities. The Cordoba team also oversees construction management for sidewalks, parking lots and garages, landscaping, seismic retrofitting, and ADA compliance. Our work at the Long Beach Community College District exemplifies a project where interface with local and statewide agencies is an integral component of our successful work. In addition, this project has included significant work with the District and local stakeholders.

Long Beach City College Solar Parking Structure

Together with the Mayor of the City of Long Beach, the Long Beach City College Bond Management Team has cut the ribbon on yet another successfully completed building on the LBCC Liberal Arts Campus. This building is a cutting-edge example of green design, functionality, and aesthetic fit. It created 5 new local green jobs with an average annual wage of $60,000 plus benefits, and over time it will remove 18,391,952 lbs of CO2 emissions from the atmosphere.

What makes the new LBCC Parking Structure so distinctive is the fact that (literally) on top of approximately 900 parking spaces is the second largest solar power system in the City of Long Beach, producing 406.585kW of renewable energy. It is the largest California Solar Initiative System in Long Beach as well as the largest campus system in Long Beach, producing enough power to not only meet the needs of the structure itself, but to feed solar energy to adjacent buildings as well. The solar photovoltaic system (PV) will produce roughly 59,000kWhrs a month, offsetting approximately 9% of the multiple buildings’ total electricity needs.

Besides the many energy benefits, this project provides a number of economic ones. Since the energy produced is drawn from a free, naturally occurring source (i.e. the sun), the college is able to eliminate roughly $110,000 a year off their total electric bill. Even more notable is the fact that the project will receive the California Solar Initiative Rebate of $621,603 to be paid to Long Beach City College over the next five years. These economic incentives leave extra funds available to invest in students, providing more classes and improving student services.

The successful completion of the LBCC Solar Parking Structure is particularly special to Cordoba because of our dedicated staff who worked tirelessly to ensure the project was delivered on time, on budget, and most importantly, in a safe manner. In fact, this project was recognized by the Statewide Educational Wrap-Up Programs (SEWUP) for jobsite safety, which resulted in no insurance claims being made for the entire project. These successes are mainly due to the excellent work of Cordoba’s very own Construction Manager Lisa Hernandez, Field Engineer Sonia Babian, and Senior Construction Manager Gene Directo.
