LBCC Math & Culinary Arts Building<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The team supporting the design and construction of the new Mathematics & Culinary Arts Building (Building V) at Long Beach City College\u2019s (LBCC<\/a>) Liberal Arts Campus was honored with an Award of Distinction<\/strong> by the Design-Build Institute of America \u2013 Western Pacific Region (DBIA-WPR)<\/a> at its 2018 Regional Conference and Awards Program on May 17, 2018, in San Diego.\u00a0 Representatives from Cordoba Corporation were on hand to receive the award on behalf of LBCC, along with other members of the design-build team, including Harper Construction and Sillman Wright Architects.\u00a0Cordoba Corporation serves as the Bond Management Team at LBCC<\/a> providing comprehensive program and construction management services in support of LBCC’s capital improvement program.<\/p>\n

The newly constructed $44 million building was LBCC\u2019s first classroom project to be completed under the Design-Build delivery method.\u00a0 The team created an integrated process that resulted in the successful completion of what has become one of Southern California\u2019s premiere culinary arts facilities.\u00a0\u00a0The Culinary Arts Department includes seven instructional kitchens: Restaurant, Production, Skills, Baking, Pastry, Multi-Use, and Demonstration, as well as a student-run restaurant and bakery counter.<\/p>\n

In addition to the Culinary Arts Department, the building houses the Math Department, which is comprised of 15 new math classrooms and a new Math Student Success Center with 70 computer workstations and 5 study and math workshop rooms.\u00a0 The Math & Culinary Arts Building also includes a reprographics center and administrative offices.\u00a0 The building is LEED Platinum certified and has important energy- and water-efficient features, including an underground storm water retention system.\u00a0 The project was\u00a0funded by the voter-approved Measure E bond measure, which along with Measure LB, fund new construction, renovations, and repairs to modernize LBCC\u2019s Pacific Coast Campus and Liberal Arts Campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe design-build team worked exceptionally well together to deliver this important project for LBCC\u2019s Liberal Arts Campus,\u201d stated Sonia Babian, who previously served as Cordoba\u2019s Assistant Construction Manager on the\u00a0Math & Culinary Arts Building Project<\/strong>, and who, along with Cordoba\u2019s Senior Vice President for Education and Facilities Michael Boomsma<\/strong>, joined the team in accepting the Award of Distinction at the DBIA-WPR Awards Program. \u201cWe worked hard to achieve the project goals, which were to accommodate the individual needs of two diverse programs into a single facility.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am really proud of Sonia for this accomplishment, along with the other Cordoba Bond Management Team members who supported this project,\u201d stated Michael Boomsma<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cWe have worked on several design-build projects at LBCC, each of which have enhanced our team\u2019s design-build experience.\u00a0 The dual purpose of the Math & Culinary Arts Building presented exciting opportunities as a design-build project, and we are pleased to see how both programs have flourished since the building was put into service.\u201d<\/p>\n
