\"MariaCordoba Corporation\u2019s\u00a0Managing Partner Maria Mehranian<\/a><\/strong>, who serves the President of the Armenia Fund<\/strong><\/a>, will be hosting a special Armenia Fund Telethon on Sunday, July 14, 2019, to mobilize fundraising efforts to support a housing program in Gyumri, Armenia.\u00a0 The telethon will be broadcast on ARTN<\/strong> TV<\/strong><\/a> on July 14th from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.<\/p>\n

Called \u201cOur Gyumri\u201d<\/strong>,<\/a> Armenia Fund\u2019s new housing program will provide approximately 60 homeless families in Gyumri with renovated and fully-furnished apartments, complete with all necessary household appliances. In addition, the program is designed to help secure the livelihoods of beneficiary families, by providing them with a broad range of job-training and work opportunities.<\/p>\n

Gyumri is Armenia\u2019s second largest city and the capital of the Shirak Region, in the northwestern part of the republic. Once Armenia\u2019s industrial heartland, Gyumri was devastated by the 1988 Spitak earthquake. Ever since the disaster, Armenian organizations, including Armenia Fund, and the international community have implemented massive reconstruction projects to assist the region in recovering.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of families in Gyumri who had lost their homes as a result of the 1988 earthquake remained essentially homeless. Most of these impoverished families, numbering over 4,000 people, live in shantytowns consisting of \u201ctemporary\u201d metal containers or shacks called \u201cdomiks.\u201d Others have found shelter in earthquake-ravaged and abandoned industrial buildings or dormitories. The living conditions are challenging due to the lack of basic amenities and such problems as rat infestation.<\/p>\n

\u201cHomelessness is a global problem now and it is a challenge facing all of us in all corners of the world. Decent housing is an essential factor in the prosperity of human beings and is a right that we have to secure for everyone,\u201d stated Maria Mehranian<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cOur goal is to end the indignity of homelessness for many more families in Gyumri, while also contributing to the ongoing recovery of this wonderful city. Everything is in place for implementing the newest phase of our program. All that\u2019s needed now is the timely support of our community here in California and beyond, so that we can continue to transform the lives of our long-suffering compatriots in Gyumri.\u201d<\/p>\n
